The SuReal team’s mission is to enhance the building sector’s sustainability. In order to facilitate this co-creation process we introduce “the SuReal Academy; how to become a Sustainability Rockstar”.

We start this Academy by introducing the SuReal’s 30 minutes of information regarding a specific sustainability topic. In the form of a webinar or in real-life.

1 – How LCA’s (Life Cycle Assessments) can be used to reach circular building goals

Wednesday 20/5/2020

14:00 – 14:30: Dutch version

15:00 – 15:30: French version

When reading articles it seems like Circular economy is the new buzz word. The same for how the linear economy has to transform into a circular economy. But the question raises: What does this now actually mean for my projects?

This webinar focusses on how you can use specific elements of circular economy:
Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) are a vital part of circular thinking as they deliver a method to analyse the environmental impact of materials. These assessments allow you to determine if a renovation is the way to go, or if demolition with a high performant new construction has the lowest environmental impact over the lifetime of the building.
Closing cycles for energy, water, resources, … is key in circular economy. Renewable energy technologies, greywater recycling, using recycled aggregates, re-using materials, … all can be used to bring traditional constructions to the next level. Examples are shown for each including the advantages these can bring to your construction projects.

Also, this webinar shows some insights into how circular economy principles allow you to implement new business models. These business models can help you to lower the CAPEX to increase the affordability of projects, or even create new businesses entirely by implementing CESCO’s (Circular Economy Service COmpanies).

2 – The jungle of certifications: a clear guide through sustainability certificates (BREEAM, WELL, LEED, C2C,…)

Wednesday 27/5/2020

14:00 – 14:30: Dutch version

15:00 – 15:30: French version

A vast number of sustainability and material certifications exist for real estate projects. Over the last years they have gained importance and for some regions and functions they even became the standard. It is however not that easy to understand what they stand for, what their benefits are and what the costs are.

During this webinar we provide:

  • A short overview of current Sustainability Certifications
  • The benefits, complications, costs of these certifications
  • Trends of these certifications
  • Quick wins and decision planning

3 – The financial assessment for all stakeholders: TCO Total Cost of Ownership

Wednesday 3/6/2020

14:00 – 14:30: Dutch version

15:00 – 15:30: French version

The best sustainable project is one that is economically feasible. The feasibility aspect is project-specific. For a lighthouse project, investment costs might be accepted to be higher. For most housing projects, however, affordability is key. The beauty lies in finding the right balance between ecology and economy.

That economic balance should also be examined in different ways: CAPEX (Investment costs) variations, TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) variations, total values, evaluation period, price changes, etc.

During this webinar, you’ll learn the basics of TCO-analysis and we’ll show which other parameters could and should play a role in informed decision-making.

4 – How wind and solar simulations can help optimize your masterplan and buildings.

Wednesday 12/8/2020

14:00 – 14:30: Dutch version

15:00 – 15:30: French version

We all experienced the feeling of being on the coast when you are in fact just sitting next to a tall building in the city. It sounds fun at first glance, but it can become very uncomfortable over time and you don’t want your project to be reminded as “the place where there is always too much wind”. The same can be said for places where you never get sunlight because it was not taken into consideration when designing dedicated areas. This webinar will show you how the combination of solar and wind simulations will ensure that your masterplan is adapted to environmental influences. We will present our methodology, how to locate the best spots for recreative purposes and bring solutions to mitigate the negative impacts of solar & wind factors.
